Ingredients
  

For the Shrimp Creole:

  • 1 lb large shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 celery stalk diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 14.5 oz diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup chicken or seafood broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce optional, for extra heat
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Creole or Cajun seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for spice
  • 1 bay leaf
  • ½ teaspoon sugar to balance acidity, optional
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 green onions chopped (for garnish)

For Serving:

  • Steamed white rice or brown rice
  • Lemon wedges optional

Instructions
 

Step 1: Sauté the Vegetables

  • Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  • Add onion, bell pepper, and celery (the “Holy Trinity” of Creole cuisine) and sauté for 5 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

  • Pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.
  • Add paprika, Creole seasoning, thyme, black pepper, salt, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf.
  • Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Add the Shrimp

  • Add the shrimp to the sauce and stir to coat.
  • Simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and are fully cooked.
  • Remove the bay leaf and discard.

Step 4: Serve & Garnish

  • Stir in fresh parsley and adjust seasoning if needed.
  • Serve hot over steamed rice, garnished with green onions and lemon wedges.
